Measurement is a crucial aspect of lesson planning that often goes overlooked. It provides educators with valuable insights into student learning and progress, allowing them to make informed decisions about instructional strategies and interventions. By incorporating measurement into lesson planning, teachers can ensure that their students are meeting the desired learning outcomes and are able to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

Needing a new idea for a measurement lesson?  How about a new spring bulletin board?  Perhaps something that combines them both?  Score!

Need something cute for spring, yet also a measurement learning experience for your K/1 students?  This interactive bulletin is just what you need for the season.

I am definitely one for working smarter and not harder. As I was contemplating what I would put up for the April classroom bulletin board, I realized that I could actually use it for double duty!

How about a bulletin board display that also encouraged learning – and not just a place to hang student work or place my cute umbrella border?  {It really is a cute border, I know.}  But I really wanted something that wasn’t just taking up space to take it up.  Classroom walls come at a premium for most teachers already.

So I sat down and created something that you could use for curriculum AND it has the added bonus of making a fun-to-look-at classroom decor spring display.  Even if you don’t have a dedicated bulletin board in the classroom, I have a workaround for that too with the portable board idea below.  Keep reading!

Measurement Bulletin Board Idea

Hopefully the spring thaw is on its way and to get you in the mood, I wanted to stop by and mention my  interactive bulletin board:  April Showers Measurement!

Need something cute for spring, yet also a measurement learning experience for your K/1 students?  This interactive bulletin is just what you need for the season.

Need something cute for spring, yet also a learning experience for your K/1 students?  This interactive bulletin is just what you were looking for!  It has everything included and is specifically used to target the following Common Core State Standards:

  • K.MD.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
  • K.MD.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
  • 1.MD.1 Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
  • 1.MD.2  Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.

Of course, you can always re-create what you see below on your own no problem!  If you want to save yourself time and energy though, feel free to keep reading more about what I have listed for you.

Choosing the Right Measurement Tools for Your Lesson

When it comes to measurement in lesson planning, there are various tools available to educators. These tools can range from traditional assessments such as quizzes and tests to more innovative approaches like project-based assessments or performance tasks. It is essential for teachers to select the appropriate tool based on the specific learning objectives and the needs of their students.

One important consideration when choosing a measurement tool is alignment with the desired learning outcomes. The tool should effectively measure what students are expected to know and be able to do. For example, if the objective is to assess problem-solving skills, a multiple-choice test may not be the most suitable option. Instead, a performance task that requires students to apply their problem-solving skills in a real-world context would be more appropriate.

Additionally, teachers should consider the practicality and feasibility of the measurement tool. Factors such as time constraints, available resources, and the number of students should be taken into account. It is important to choose a tool that can be administered efficiently and effectively within the given constraints.

Incorporating Real-World Examples to Enhance Measurement Skills

One effective way to enhance measurement skills is by incorporating real-world examples into lessons. Real-world examples provide students with opportunities to apply their measurement skills in authentic contexts, making the learning experience more engaging and meaningful.

By using real-world examples, teachers can help students see the relevance of measurement in their everyday lives. For example, in a math lesson on measurement, students could measure ingredients while baking cookies or calculate distances while planning a road trip. These real-life scenarios not only make the learning experience more enjoyable but also help students understand how measurement is used in practical situations.

Incorporating real-world examples also allows for the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students are challenged to analyze and interpret data, make connections between different concepts, and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems. This not only deepens their understanding of measurement but also prepares them for future challenges they may encounter outside the classroom.

Creating Engaging Measurement Activities for Students

Engaging measurement activities are essential for capturing students’ interest and promoting active participation in the learning process. When students are engaged, they are more likely to retain information, apply their knowledge, and develop a deeper understanding of measurement concepts.

One tip for creating engaging measurement activities is to make them hands-on and interactive. Provide students with opportunities to manipulate objects, use measuring tools, and solve real-world problems. For example, instead of simply asking students to convert units of measurement on a worksheet, create a scavenger hunt where students have to measure different objects in the classroom or school and convert their measurements.

Another tip is to incorporate games and competitions into measurement activities. Students love a friendly challenge, and incorporating games can make learning more enjoyable and motivating. For example, create a measurement relay race where students have to measure different objects and record their measurements accurately and quickly.

Differentiating Measurement Lessons for Diverse Learners

Differentiating measurement lessons is essential to meet the needs of diverse learners. Students have different learning styles, abilities, and prior knowledge, and it is important to provide them with appropriate support and challenges.

One way to differentiate measurement lessons is by providing multiple entry points or levels of difficulty. Offer different versions of measurement activities or assignments that cater to different skill levels or learning needs. For example, provide additional support materials or scaffolding for struggling students, while offering extension activities or challenges for advanced learners.

Another way to differentiate is by using a variety of instructional strategies and materials. Some students may benefit from visual representations, while others may prefer hands-on activities or verbal explanations. By using a combination of strategies and materials, teachers can engage all learners and provide them with multiple ways to understand and apply measurement concepts.

Portable Bulletin Board Solution

I mentioned earlier that I had a solution for those who don’t have a permanent bulletin board in the classroom to use for this project and it’s so simple, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it before.

Use a science fair tri-fold project board.

I used one in my example pictures above in fact.

They come in tons of different colors, they can sit atop an extra table or along the window shelf, and you can easily fold them up and lean it against a wall to stash it if more room is needed.

Use sticky tack and command hooks to add your elements to the board (or even small thumbtacks) and the board itself can be reused throughout the entire school year.  Pretty sweet, right?

Need something cute for spring, yet also a measurement learning experience for your K/1 students?  This interactive bulletin is just what you need for the season.

This bulletin board set pretty much has everything already ready for you – and I adore the umbrellas and galoshes!  There are seriously so cute to look at throughout the day.

Again, if you want to create your own version, I always encourage you to feel free to do so if it saves you some pennies in the classroom.

But, if you prefer to save that time and spend it with your family instead, I have done the hard work already for you.  What a fun bulletin board to have up when your students return from their holiday weekend if you have a later Spring Break than most.

Would you like a head start on creating your bulletin board? Download the bulletin board border and header title pages below! Enjoy!

So, I thought this was such a cute idea that I saw on Pinterest (of course) but I hadn’t seen it done in the classroom.

I also know that I love to switch things up for special occasions or seasons, but don’t like to go overboard in the decorations.

Not to mention a little thing most teachers also must abide by called:  living on a teacher’s salary.

So redoing your classroom theme every month is not really feasible either.

I love to switch things up for special occasions or seasons, but don’t like to go overboard in the decorations. Here is a simple idea for you to use too!

The Benefits of Using Supply Caddies in the Classroom

One effective way to maintain classroom organization is by using supply caddies. Supply caddies are portable containers that hold essential supplies for students.

By providing each student group with their own supply caddy, you can ensure that materials are easily accessible and neatly stored.

This not only saves time but also increases efficiency in the classroom.

Essential Supplies to Include in Your Supply Caddies

To ensure that your supply caddies are well-stocked and ready for student use, it’s important to include essential supplies.

These supplies may vary depending on the grade level and subject area you teach, but some common items include pencils, erasers, markers, scissors, glue sticks, and rulers.

It’s also helpful to have extra supplies such as paper clips, sticky notes, and index cards available for students to use when needed.

I love to switch things up for special occasions or seasons, but don’t like to go overboard in the decorations. Here is a simple idea for you to use too!

Check out the video to see how easy this is (along with the secret item you need to make it that you don’t see in the picture) and let me know in the comments what you could use this idea for in your own classroom?

Materials you will need:

  • A muffin tin (used is fine)

Tips for Maintaining and Restocking Your Supply Caddies

To ensure that your supply caddies remain organized and well-stocked throughout the school year, it’s important to establish a system for maintenance and restocking.

Regularly check the caddies to see if any supplies need to be replenished or replaced. You can involve students in this process by assigning them specific roles, such as supply monitors, who are responsible for checking and restocking the caddies on a regular basis.

Incorporating Technology into Your Supply Caddy System

In today’s digital age, incorporating technology into your supply caddy system can be a practical and effective way to enhance organization.

For example, you can create a digital inventory of the supplies in each caddy using a spreadsheet or an online tool. This allows you to easily track and update the contents of each caddy, making it simpler to restock and maintain organization.

Maximizing Your Classroom Efficiency with Efficient Supply Caddy Placement

Strategic placement of supply caddies is key to maximizing classroom efficiency.

Consider the layout of your classroom and the needs of your students when deciding where to position the caddies. Ideally, they should be easily accessible to all students and located near relevant work areas.

For example, if you have a designated art corner, place the art supply caddies nearby for easy access during creative activities.

Oh yeah – and don’t forget to grab the freebie labels file (with 3 blank ones also supplied for your customization). Use PowerPoint or Google Slides to edit.

I included winter and spring-themed versions.

Enjoy!

Hey teaching friends!

Today, I just wanted to share an idea that I did for my son’s preschool class for his birthday treat.  I thought it would also be a great idea for an end of the school year celebration too!

It was a huge hit with the teachers and students alike!

A fun idea for spring snacks for a classroom birthday or celebration! They look cute - and are on the healthier side of classroom snack options too!

Do you have snack time in your class?

With so many schools growing in class sizes, lunchtime can range anywhere from 10:30 am until as late as 2:30 pm or more!

Because of that reason, many teachers are asking students to bring in healthy snacks in order to break up the day a bit and not be hungry at either end of the day.

Depending on what demographic populations you serve, asking students to bring in healthy items (or anything at all) will probably not be feasible.

Can you use a super easy Earth Day Activity for your files?

Science Bundle Crayon

Silly question, I know.
Yes please!

What are the best foods for healthy classroom snacks?

I personally love using fresh fruit or cut up veggies when possible.  It is simple to store it in a staff lounge fridge and grab it right before snacktime.

Pretzels, popcorn, and crackers are great for non perishable items.

Of course, most teachers will need to stay away from recipes using peanut butter for kids.  It is best, for me anyway, to make options that are no-bake as much as possible.

Every so often, a special sweet treat is a fun change, as long as it’s not an every day event.  Plus, you’ll find adults will randomly “stop by to say hi” on those special days as well – haha!

Healthy Spring Themed Snacks

Supplies:

  • clothespins
  • washi tape
  • stick on googly eyes
  • pipe cleaners
  • baggies
  • snacks (I used grapes and fish crackers)

Steps:

1. Place the washi tape in strips on the top of the clothespins.

2.  Stick on the eyes.

3.  Place in your snacks.  Clip on the clothespins.  Bend the pipe cleaner and insert in the clip.

I mean, is it really cute if it doesn’t have googly eyes?  I didn’t think so.

Seriously it is that easy and there was no dry time for paint!  That is MY kind of project!

Students will get a kick out of something unique for snack during a brain break.  It lightens the mood and brightens gloomy spring days for sure.

You could even take it a step further and incorporate some learning ideas into snacktime.  It would mesh well with topics about health and nutrition.  Lesson plans that cover butterflies and their life cycle.  Students would write a creative story about butterflies who were made of snacks.  Using the snack crackers and the grapes, ask students to write math story problems – and then trade with a partner to answer the questions.

So many difference ways to integrate food into your daily curriculum – plus the spring theme makes it extra special.

One bonus optional step: Add a cute gift tag! Grab yours below.

Enjoy making your fun spring themed classroom snacks and I would love to hear other fun party snack ideas you have in the comments below.  Thanks for sharing!

Thinking spring yet?  Spring bulletin boards for classroom teachers (or even libraries or in church) are always a figurative breath of fresh air – even if the temperature hasn’t quite warmed up yet.

Cute bulletin board idea themes for spring might include gardens, flowers, pinwheels, bunnies, pictures of baby chicks, spring showers, and definitely a lot of freshly grown green grass.

Spring bulletin boards for classrooms and libraries are always a figurative breath of fresh air - even if the temperature hasn't quite warmed up yet.

I love the bulletin board options below, which are good for most grades, including preschool up through upper elementary grades.

One of my best classroom set up tips is that I always change my bulletin board before leaving for school breaks, such as Spring Break.  I make sure my calendar is changed (if applicable), the bulletin boards are done, new pencils are put out, and usually I try to change up the desk arrangements too.

When students return from their time off, it is nice to walk into a “new” space filled with the promise of warmer air, birds chirping, green grass, no snow, and outside recess.

And it is enough to bring a smile to my face, which is important to brave the busy testing and then end-of-the-school year stretch which is sure to be upon us way faster than planned.

Best Spring Bulletin Boards

Here are some pictures of the best spring boards I have seen around the web.  So many unique options to really brighten up the classroom!

I love, love, love how this looks like a dandelion, but is made from student hands!  The best part is that the more creative and colorful their hand designs are, the more spectacular the final result!

Flower Theme Bulletin Board Resources

When I think of spring, flower garden images pop up before anything else.  There’s just something about fresh flowers growing in the ground – the smell alone seems to calm my otherwise hurried day.

While it’s probably not feasible – or allowed – in most schools to have live flowers in the classroom due to allergies, aroma sensitivities, and more, perhaps these flower patterns will allow you to create a spring bulletin board masterpiece that brings a little of that bliss inside with you.

Plus – the 3D effects really help the board to get noticed too!

Using simple strips of construction paper, you can make all sorts of different paper flowers.  Maybe even have students help without including directions.  It would be a great lesson in creative thinking!

Maybe try a new medium?  You can use felt to create very realistic soft petal flowers.

Anyone else out there prefer easy and fast?  Me too.  Cupcake liners and glue dots.  Done.

These tulips are just gorgeous and would look amazing on a bulletin board for sure.

Students can practice cutting skills to help create the new spring bulletin board!  These flowers are simple circles that have been folded in half and glued down on one edge.  For older students, you could even talk about circumference and more before creating your classroom flower garden.

These huge paper flowers look hard to make, but are actually quite easy.  Even easier if you have a cutting machine, like a Cricut or Silhouette.

I am thinking this would be super easy with a round scrapbook punch for perfect circles every time.  Glue them together and you have a masterpiece.

Another felt flower option – so cute!

Spring bulletin boards for classrooms and libraries are always a figurative breath of fresh air - even if the temperature hasn't quite warmed up yet.

After all that flower-making, you’ll need something for your board title.  I whipped up some cute bulletin board letters you can print and enjoy the coming season with as well!  As far as what to put in the middle, the ideas are limitless and can reflect whatever you are teaching right now!

Spring bulletin boards for classrooms and libraries are always a figurative breath of fresh air - even if the temperature hasn't quite warmed up yet.

A couple of ideas:

  • Cut out a yellow circle from construction paper and place on board.  Cut out flower “petals” for students to write on.
  • In the middle of the circle, place a target number.  Have students write out “ways to say that number” on the petals and staple to the board around the flower center.
  • Using the same idea, write a letter in the middle.  Students can find words starting (or ending) with that letter.
  • Choose a word to write in the middle.  Ask students to use a thesaurus to find synonyms for their writing.

Have fun coming up with ideas for your bulletin board, or just use the letters for word wall headings.  You could even have students use them to build words in a center.

I hope you can find a good use for them and enjoy!

Teaching synonyms is a fun way for building vocabulary and allowing for more concise writing skills.  You can use worksheets, anchor charts, manipulatives, bingo, or read alouds to introduce the concepts to your children.

Being able to identify synonyms – and their opposite partner words – antonyms – are super fun topics for any grade level 2nd-4th English class!  Sentence structure becomes immediately better when students are exposed to variations of common words they use regularly.

Teaching synonyms is a fun way for building vocabulary and allowing for more concise writing skills.  Anchor charts and free worksheet printables will help!

What if your teacher lesson plans taught synonyms like a word detective?

The class needs to find the clues that lead to a hidden mystery word.  Each day, you share another synonym for a common word and place it on a word wall or anchor chart.

The master lists of synonyms grows each day, as does the student guesses as their ideas are eliminated when a new word is added.

The look of excitement in their faces is so pleasing to watch.  The thrill of hearing their guesses while realizing that their word choice is suddenly so much larger than it has been before.

Learning  has never been more fun!

Why teach synonyms?

The best reason to teach synonyms is honestly for a wider variety of word choice that expands the vocabulary library.  Isn’t our goal to grow students into better readers and thinkers?  By doing specific activities in school where students use their knowledge or skill to create more complex sentences, it enhances their ability to communicate with others and learn better.

After working on a classroom brainstorming list to pool together various words that can mean the same thing, make a master list of the words and photocopy one for each child to keep within his or her writing folder for easy reference while writing.

I guarantee if you ask students to swap out just one word from their writing this week for another option in their vocabulary book, you will start to see students using better words more often.  The bonus is that you will start to hear it in their speaking skills as well.

How do you teach synonyms and antonyms?

Usually teaching synonyms and antonyms goes hand in hand, much like peanut butter and jelly.  It doesn’t always have to be taught simultaneously, but they are certainly two pieces of the grammar pie that go together very well.

Anchor charts are a great way to teach this strategy too!

This one is super cute and shows how to connect the S in synonym with the word same.

Another way I have always taught synonyms in the past is through literature.  A few great choices are:

Of course, they are all included in the free set to use interchangeably with your students’ needs.  I know how you probably have a classroom full of students that could use either version, so they will all be at your fingertips for the taking!

Teaching synonyms is a fun way for building vocabulary and allowing for more concise writing skills.  Anchor charts and free worksheet printables will help!

A word of warning:  the higher difficulty versions do include some words not regularly used as synonyms as I specifically wanted to make it challenging.  Many students will need a thesaurus or dictionary to look up the meanings of the word in question.

This can be done in traditional book form, my personal favorite way to teach referencing skills in addition to the synonym unit, but students could also feasibly find help by using an online version such as dictionary.com or thesaurus.com to assist them in working through the words.

These free worksheets for synonym practice can be used during your lesson, as a homework assignment, morning work, centers, or even as an extension activity for your gifted students who might be ready to tackle something a bit harder.

All the answer keys are also included in the packet so you can check it in a flash.
